The Cause

Manchester City’s community story began in 1880 when the Connell family in Gorton harnessed the power of football in a bid to bring their community together.Today, our desire to bring positive change to communities in Manchester and further afield through football is stronger than ever. With support and engagement from our passionate fans, we are using the ‘football effect’ to promote health, confidence, safe spaces and pathways into training and jobs for young people in Manchester and around the world.

Established in 1986, City in the Community (CITC), the Club’s Foundation delivers a range of award-winning programmes, focusing on three main areas: Health, Education, and Inclusion.

In the 2018/19 season CITC programmes engaged with over 36,000 regular participants, delivering over 31,000 community sessions including 4,750 hours of free football sessions provided during school holidays & peak times of anti-social behaviour. During the season CITC also provided qualifications for over 500 local people and over 6,500 hours of volunteering opportunities and work experience placements.
