The four young people who all take part in the Kickz project organised by Manchester City Football Club performed their song ‘Why Music?’ in front of members of Kasabian, Craig David and X Factor winner Shayne Ward.
The event was organised by the Premier League and the BRIT Trust to announce a major donation to fund community music initiatives as parts of the Kickz project.
The Kickz project is managed nationally by the Football Foundation and delivered on the ground by professional club’s community coaches. It uses the power of football to create stronger, safer and more respectful communities by developing young people’s potential.
The young people were invited to take part in the event having written, recorded and produced their own CD as part of Manchester City’s project. The album ‘Kickz Sessions: Volume One’ features 8 MC’s who have previously never been to a recording studio.
Alex Williams MBE from City in the Community said: “The event was a great success and a great experience for the young people who can be proud of themselves with the way they represented the football club and the city of Manchester, but most importantly themselves and their families.”
Manchester City has been involved in Kickz since August 2006, running sessions for 13-18 year olds on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings at the Platt Lane Leisure Complex in Fallowfield. Up to 200 young people a week are given the opportunity to play football, work out in the gym, take part in MCing and DJing workshops and complete qualifications.
And in June 2007 CITC launched its second Kickz project based at the Barclays Spaces for Sport, Sporting Edge sports centre in Openshaw with funding from Connexions, Manchester.
