They have featured in the Streetlife project organised by Manchester City Council which - after nine weeks of competition between 11-a-side teams across the city - saw Withington beat Belle Vue in the final.
The project gives young people who wouldn’t normally have the opportunity a chance to take part in a competitive and structured league. Manchester City’s registered charity City in the Community helped to organise the final as part of its partnership with the council.
Councillor Mike Amesbury, Executive Member for Culture & Leisure at Manchester City Council, said: “The Streetlife tournament has been extremely successful in encouraging young people to take part in sport, helping to improve fitness, confidence and discipline.
“Most importantly, they’ve had a lot of fun and we’ve seen some very skilled players develop throughout the tournament, and we are confident they will move on to further sporting success as a result of their participation in this league.
“I’d like to congratulate everyone who has taken part, particularly the finalists who worked so hard to get here. It’s a real achievement for them to play at a prestigious venue like the City of Manchester Stadium and a truly memorable day for all those involved.”
Streetlife was established in 2006 and is delivered by Manchester City Council and Positive Futures to help engage young people in positive, physical activity. Manchester City Council also provides transport to and from the matches, referees and kits for the teams to wear.
