The years rolled away at the City Academy last week when Shaun Wright-Phillips popped in at Platt Lane to meet 14 young people as part of the Prince's Trust Get Started With Football programme.

Shaun, who is an ambassador for the Trust, was the first City player to make it into the senior side through the club’s Academy system and last Thursday he came back to where it all began for him over a decade ago.

Get Started With Football is a course that gives young people the chance to gain a football coaching award and a first aid qualification while taking part in football coaching and fitness sessions at the Platt Lane Leisure Complex in Fallowfield.

Those on the course, run with support from the club’s City In The Community programme,  had the chance to meet Shaun afterwards and grill him in a Q & A session, and Shaun was delighted to lend his support at a place that is so close to his heart.

He said, “This is a great thing for kids to do, it gives them a focus, something to concentrate on and is a great way to use their time. There was never anything like this when I was their age - I wish there had been. I’m happy to be able to help support this project, especially here at Platt Lane where it all started for me.”

CITC’s Executive Manager Alex Williams MBE said: “At the club we are very proud of the work we have done with the Prince’s Trust and the fact that we have been able to help and support 100’s of young people over the years.

“In recent years we have also recruited a number of volunteers from the Trust who we have been able to employ on a full time basis.”
