The Greater Manchester Marathon is returning after a 10 year absence and Manchester City are delighted to be named as a key charity partner, raising funds for the 'Shoot for the Moon' partnership with Sport Relief.

We’re inviting staff and fans to get their running shoes on and take part in this momentous sporting event, fundraising for vulnerable young people and families in the local area by representing ‘Shoot for the Moon.

You’ll be in good company, with former Manchester City player Ian Brightwell and his wife representing City in the marathon, just a week after he’s completed the London marathon.

Ian said: “This will be a huge personal challenge, but one I’m really excited about. It’s a fantastic opportunity to raise funds for people and projects in the local area, and I hope that together with the fans we can make a real difference.”

City in the Community will be offering a series of fun football challenges with expert skills coaches on hand whilst City mascots Moonchester and Moonbeam will be kicking the race off alongside the other charity representatives.

Triple Olympian Ron Hill, MBE, (pictured with Ian Brightwell and Paul Lake) said:

“I am delighted that after an absence of ten years and in Olympic year the Marathon will return to Manchester. The Greater Manchester Marathon is set to become a huge success and I am sure that in future years it will become a classic.”

Over 6,000 runners have already signed up for the race with entries received from as far afield as Australia, USA, Malaysia and Hong Kong for ‘The People’s Marathon’.  It is set become an event of which the people of Greater Manchester will have reason to be proud and Manchester City want as many fans as possible to be part of it.

Shoot for the Moon is the brand new fundraising partnership between Manchester City and Sport Relief, raising money to support young people and families in East Manchester. Over the next few months the partnership will announce a series of exciting fundraising events, giving fans the opportunity to experience top class comedy, see City Legends back in action and play golf with the stars, all whilst raising money for a fantastic cause.
