As part of City in The Community’s new ‘One City’ Disability Sport programme, local schools have been participating in a new schools' football league.

The new programme which is funded by the Premier League Charitable Fund and Manchester City FC,  aims to increase sporting opportunities for local people with disabilities in Manchester by delivering free football and multi-sports in schools and at extra curriculum sessions.

The exciting new football league is the first of its kind in Manchester and has been held at the Manchester Tennis and Football Centre.

Building on previous disability tournaments, the schools play against each other in monthly fixtures with the overall winners receiving trophies at the end of the season.  Six schools have entered the league with over 60 pupils playing in the league.

Melland School ‘A’ team from Gorton, emerged as League champions with an impressive total of 88 points with Northridge School from Blackley receiving a fair play award for their commitment and sportsmanship throughout the season.

In May the Paralympic World Cup was held in Manchester and to coincide with the games City in The Community delivered two disability football tournaments for local Primary and Secondary special schools.

Seven schools participated with Grange and Horizon School from Gorton winning the tournaments.

Disability Sport Manager, Daniel Landstrom commented: “The One City Football League has been greatly received and is a fantastic opportunity for footballers with disabilities to play competitive football against players of a similar ability.  We have created an environment for players to practice the football skills taught in school in competitive games.”

For anyone interested in participating in the project we currently have two free disability football sessions which are delivered during term time.
