Borges was a thorn in the Stags’ side all evening, scoring once and in added time he was denied by a fine save and struck the bar within the space of a minute in a frantic finish at the One Call Stadium.
But despite the loss, the 18 year-old Portuguese winger, blessed with blistering pace, enhanced his growing reputation as an exciting prospect with an excellent display.
“It was a tough game, and we’ve got to live with the result,” said Borges.
“I thought the lads were brilliant and we were just a bit unlucky at the end and our focus is on the next game, now.
“It’s good to get a goal in this type of game, but I could have scored more because I had some good opportunities.
“When I hit the bar, I thought it was going in and I was just getting ready to celebrate, but it wasn’t to be.
“It’s men’s football – it will help us develop as players and we know what to expect in our next game in this competition.
“We want to win every game we play, and, in every competition we are in, we play to win – it’s not as easy as that, but that’s our mentality.
“We didn’t win today, but next game we will aim to bounce back and hopefully get the three points.”
And on his own development, Borges added: “I’m enjoying it – the lads and the coaches have helped me to progress this far and I’ve just got to keep working hard and try my best every time I play.”
