Manchester City’s Carlos Borges has been named Premier League 2 Player of the Season.

The award caps what has been a quite exceptional 2022/23 campaign for the 19-year-old Portuguese winger.

Borges topped the league’s scoring charts with his 21 goals from 24 appearances helping City’s Elite Development Squad claim a historic third consecutive PL2 title – something no other side has ever achieved before.

Blessed with superb technique and outstanding pace alongside his eye for goal, Borges also weighed in with 11 assists across the course of the season, further illustrating his huge impact on Brian Barry-Murphy’s exciting young side.

It’s the third year in succession that the prestigious prize has gone to a City youngster, with Borges following in the footsteps of James McAtee, who won last term’s Player of the Season award, and Liam Delap who was the 2021 recipient.

In winning the 2023 prize, Borges saw off competition from City colleagues Oscar Bobb and Adedire Mebude alongside Southampton’s Dominic Ballard, West Bromwich Albion’s Reyes Cleary, Leeds United’s Mateo Joseph Fernandez, Chelsea’s Alfie Gilchrist and Crystal Palace youngster Jack Wells-Morrison.

The award caps a magnificent season all round for Borges.

He claimed an astonishing 29 goals in total across all competitions, a haul which included four separate hat-tricks.

Meanwhile, he was also voted the EDS Players’ Player of the Year at our recent Academy awards night.

In accepting the award, Borges spoke of his pride and also acknowledged the key role played by his EDS colleagues alongside the guidance and support provided by head coach Brian Barry-Murphy and his coaching staff.

“There is a special bond in the squad, and I would also like to thank Brian and the coaches for all the help and support they have given me and the rest of the team.

“I’m very happy to have played my part in helping us win the title once again and this award just adds to what has been a brilliant season.”
