City’s Elite Development Squad have made history by being crowned Premier League 2 champions.

Our maiden PL2 title success was confirmed when nearest rivals Blackburn were held to a 2-2 draw at home to Liverpool this evening.

It meant with three games remaining we hold a 10 point advantage and so can’t be overtaken.

It’s a magnificent achievement and one that caps a memorable first season in charge for head coach Enzo Maresca, his coaching staff and squad.

Only appointed to the role last summer, the City youngsters have thrived under the former Italian striker’s astute leadership.

Our brand of thrilling, possession-based attacking football has garnered widespread praise and the EDS squad have gone from strength to strength as the season has progressed.

To date we have plundered a remarkable 68 goals from our 21 games – at an average of more than three a game – while our back line has only conceded 28 goals, the second lowest tally in the league.

Our title success has also proved a real collective effort with every member of Maresca’s squad making their own vital contribution to the cause.

Reflecting on the achievement, Maresca said he was immensely proud of what his young players have achieved.

“It’s a fantastic achievement especially in the way we achieved it and I am very proud of the players and the staff and I want to thank them all,” the boss reflected.

“It’s the first time that the Club has won it. I think we deserve it and it has shown how all the lads have given everything this season.

“For me it’s been a lovely season, a beautiful season - especially because I saw the players making an effort to understand the game.”

City’s EDS youngsters are back in action on Friday when we travel to tackle West Ham in a game that will be screened live on CITY+.

Everyone at Manchester City would like to congratulate Enzo, his staff and the squad on their tremendous achievement.
