Elite Development Squad head coach Enzo Maresca believes there is much more to come from his exciting young side in the wake of Saturday’s remarkable 7-2 Premier League 2 victory at Liverpool.

The City youngsters produced a stunning all-round display on Merseyside to overwhelm the league leaders who prior, to the weekend, boasted the best defensive record in the league.

Cole Palmer and Liam Delap both claimed a brace apiece with Adrian Bernabe, Ben Knight and Tommy Doyle also on target to lift our Under-23s up to fourth in the PL2 table just two points off the top with a game in hand.

However, Marseca is adamant that his side have still only partially tapped into their overall potential.

“Saturday was almost a perfect day other than the goals conceded but there is much more to come,” the former Italian striker reflected.

“For me in terms of a complete performance it was like when we played away against Lincoln (in the Papa John’s Trophy).

“Lincoln are fighting to win League One and Liverpool, as I said to the staff before the game, they are the leaders in PL2.

“They had the best figures in terms of goals conceded so for me both Saturday and the Lincoln game have been the best performance of our season.

“It was a great performance and a great result. In terms of attitude it was also very good and maybe we surprised them as we changed a few things in terms of tactics.

“I think we are on the right path, but we have to continue to help the team to improve.

“If we continue to work hard and to try to make efforts in terms of training every day, I think absolutely we can

“There are many more things we can improve. I think we are 60 per cent we are not at 100 per cent yet.

“But we understand we become a team by playing together and working together and I think we can do something important.”
