Academy director Jason Wilcox and City manager Pep Guardiola have both paid special tribute to our Elite Development Squad and coaching team in the wake of our Premier League 2 title triumph.

The City youngsters secured the crown in thrilling style with a 3-1 away at Leeds United on Friday evening.

It’s another magnificent achievement for Brian Barry-Murphy’s young charges coming on the back of our maiden PL2 title success 12 months ago.

In the process, City have also become only the second side in PL2 history to achieve back-to-back league title victories.

And both Wilcox and Guardiola were quick to hail our latest success, saluting the hard work and exemplary attitude of everyone who had made this latest success possible.

“To retain the Premier League 2 title is another tremendous achievement by our Elite Development Squad,” said former England international Wilcox, a Premier League title winner with Blackburn in his playing days.

“We are one of the youngest teams in PL2 and whilst we are extremely proud of the results, we are even more proud with the way we have won.

“They have epitomised the style of play we want all our age groups to adopt at the Academy.

“This achievement is another significant moment for our Academy and is once again testament, not only to the players and coaches, but every single of member of staff who works extremely hard every day to deliver success.”

Those warm words were echoed by Guardiola who has spoken regularly of his admiration for the work of our Academy and who has also afforded several of our EDS players their first team debuts this season.

“I am so delighted for everyone here at Manchester City,” said Pep.

“You cannot believe how tough it is to win this title, so to do it two years in a row is an incredible achievement. It really shows how much hard work goes on at Manchester City’s Academy.

“Moments like this are special. I hope all the players and Academy staff take some time to reflect on this success and enjoy it. They should be so proud of what they have done.

“The way the team has played this season tells you everything about the attitude and focus of our young players. They work so hard – with and without the ball – and have played some really top football.

“I want to send huge congratulations to Jason [Wilcox], Brian [Barry-Murphy], his staff and everyone who has worked towards this title.”

City’s final PL2 game of the season at home to Everton next Friday will be screened live on CITY+ with the players presented with the trophy and their medals after the game.
