Liam Delap paid tribute to the service of his teammates after he continued his impressive goalscoring form with a hat-trick in our Elite Development Squad's 7-1 win over Southampton.

The 18-year-old striker has now hit the back of the net 25 times in 20 games in all competitions this season and leads the Premier League 2 scoring charts on 19 goals.

Against Southampton he was supported by Felix Nmecha’s brace and one piece from Adrian Bernabe and Callum Doyle in a scintillating performance at the Academy Stadium.

Delap has netted an incredible 13 goals in his last six league games and says his remarkable tally lies with the quality of his teammates.

“The balls they put in for me make it hard to miss so I put it down to them,” he said.

“I’ve been working on my finishing everyday in training but obviously you need the boys to assist you and they have been putting it in there for me.”

City are now unbeaten in 12 games and have not tasted defeat since November, when Southampton beat us 5-2 and our latest victory moves Enzo Maresca‘s side five points clear at the top of the Premier League 2 table with six games to play.

Delap admitted the squad were keen to avenge our previous loss to the Saints and, whilst we’ve built a healthy lead, he believes it is important we don’t look too far ahead in the race for the title.

“The team is stronger and before the game we all sat down and obviously everyone was angry after the first match,” added the striker.

“We wanted to go out there and show it was a fluke and we showed that today.

“We are aware of being top but we just try to focus on the next game and getting three points to put us in good stead to stay there.”

Maresca’s team return to league action on Sunday, as we take on Chelsea away from home.

Despite the recent run of form, Delap says he and his teammates will not be taking the West London side for granted.

“It will be a tough game, it was 2-2 here in the first game. Obviously, Chelsea are a top team so we will be expecting nothing less.

“All I think we need to do is carry on as a team like we have been and we should do well.”
