Nico O’Reilly says he and his City colleagues are hungry to maintain our flying start to 2023 when we play host to Brighton in Tuesday’s FA Youth Cup fourth round clash.

Ben Wilkinson’s youngsters entertain the Seagulls at the Academy Stadium in a game that CITY+ and Recast subscribers can watch live with the action getting underway at 7pm.

It’s a rematch of last season when the pair met at the identical stage of the competition on the south coast with Brighton edging a 1-0 win.

This time round however, City have the benefit of home advantage and with both our Under-18s and EDS having returned to action in fine fashion after the Christmas break with successive league wins, confidence within the group is high.

For his part, O’Reilly says the players are determined to transfer that league momentum to the FA Youth Cup, a competition City boast a fine recent record in, having won the tournament in 2020 and reached the final in four of the five preceding seasons.

“We want to be going far in the FA Youth Cup this year and hopefully we can win it,” said the talented young midfielder.

“We made a good start against Blackburn (in the third round) and it’s come at the right time of the season for us as we have been getting better all the time since it started.

“We’ve made the most of the break over Christmas so we’re ready for all of the matches to come.

“We’ll train hard in the week and then it all comes down to knowing our plans and putting them into place on the pitch.”

Attacking midfielder O’Reilly has enjoyed a fine 2022/23 campaign so far.

From 19 appearances across all competitions, the 17-year-old has registered five goals and nine assists.

Two of those goals came in City’s impressive UEFA Youth League campaign which saw us top the group and qualify for the knockout stages for the first time in four years.

Looking forward, O’Reilly says he is eager to keep pushing his claims and seek to further his experience with City’s Under-23 group in PL2.

“I want to be pushing for selection for the EDS so to do that I have to be playing well every time I play for the Under-18s,” O’Reilly added.

“Hopefully that means I can get more goals too if I keep getting in those positions.”
