George Glendon is hardly lacking in motivation for Thursday night’s clash with Manchester United.

As a local lad and a lifelong seasoncard holder, the 19-year old is desperate to clinch City’s first Manchester Senior Cup title since 2010.

George has enjoyed an excellent pre-season as the base of Patrick Vieira’s EDS midfield, wearing the captain’s armband on several occasions and looking sharp in friendly matches across Europe.

Now the team are back and hard at work at Carrington, he reveals that they’re in good shape to kick-off the new season with a trophy.

“Normally you play cup finals at the end of the season so it is a bit of an unusual start but I think it’s a good thing for us to begin with a properly competitive game,” he told mcfc.co.uk.

“It’s a chance for us to prove ourselves to Patrick  going into the first league game against Chelsea and force a way into the starting XI.

“Any game is big playing for City but it’s that bit more special playing against United and especially in a cup final.

“I feel really fit, I think the lads are all in really good shape -it’s been a good pre-season. We’ve had 20 days together in Croatia and Germany and both trips were really positive for us.”

Glendon scored the winning goal last time these two teams met in an under-21 derby back in January.

It was a moment the youngster clearly savoured and one he would certainly like a repeat of to help end a run of three pre-season games without a win.

“Everyone knows how important to play in a derby and to try to win,” he said. “It was a good moment for me to score against United last season in our win there.

“Hopefully I can have another good game on Thursday and we can lift the cup at Hyde.

“I think it’s going to be a good game, hopefully we can beat them and win the cup. We’ve lost our last three pre-season games, so hopefully we can turn that around in front of a good crowd and lift the trophy.”

Kick-off for the Manchester Senior Cup final is at 7pm BST, with admission priced at just £3 for adults and £1 for children.
