Making his first competitive start since injury, the German got 60 minutes under his belt at the Etihad Stadium as he looks to get match fit ahead of his return to first team action.
Playing alongside Phil Foden in midfield, Gundogan looked composed and, in what is a young Premier League 2 outfit, the manager felt the 26-year-old was a great role model for his team-mates.
“He’s totally professional,” said Davies.
“He’s shown all the small things which make up a good professional. From the way he is around the players – he’s one of the first ones there for the team meeting.
“He’s looking like he’s getting back to his best. He’s still got many more gears I’m sure, but everything he did showed our boys what it takes to get in our first team, so that was a great lesson for all of them.”
After dominating for long periods of the game, the Blues were unfortunate to only come away with a point after Layton Ndukwu’s penalty and George Thomas’ late strike cancelled out Lorenzo Gonzalez and Benjamin Garre goals.
But Davies was pleased with the performance nonetheless, though admitted to a sense of frustration at not taking the three points he felt his side deserved.
“First half we were very good,” he added.
“It was a good performance but the lesson we’ve learned is to be a bit more clinical in the final third and make good choices when defending.
“We’re massively frustrated. The lads deserved so much more because they did a lot of the things we asked of them in terms of the way we controlled the game and created chances.
“We totally dominated the game and but for a little better decision making in the last third we would have won, but I am pleased in terms of performance.”
