Ahead of Manchester City’s UEFA Youth League trip to Austria this week, we look back on some of our famous visits to the European country.

There will be full build-up and coverage of the UEFA Youth League tie on mancity.com and @ManCityAcademy on Twitter but in the meantime, why not reminisce on City’s past Austrian adventures.

1970 European Cup Winners’ Cup Final

Goals from Neil Young and Francis Lee saw Manchester City lift their first European trophy with a 2-1 victory over Gornik Zabrze at the Prater Stadium in Vienna.

It was the tenth year of the tournament for teams that lifted their domestic cups in the previous year and City had already felled the likes of Athletic Bilbao and Schalke 04 to reach the Austrian final.

Goalkeeper Joe Corrigan said: “Playing in the ECWC final was awesome. To play in such a great side and at that level is a tremendous feeling but you have to keep your feet on the ground.”

After the match, iconic managerial duo Joe Mercer and Malcolm Allison joined in the end of season party and described it as a ‘perfect’ night.

Alan fever in the Europa League

David Silva scored his first goal for Manchester City to help them to victory over Red Bull Salzburg in their opening Europa League group match of 2010/11.

The Spanish World Cup winner sidefooted in the opener from eight yards following striker Jo’s lay-off and City doubled their lead after the break when Jo followed up from Carlos Tevez’s 20-yarder.

However, in the eyes of City fans the star of the two ties in the Europa League group wasn’t Silva or Tevez but Salzburg’s forward Alan.

Although it was a couple of months until Alan would appear in Manchester and become a City icon, there was plenty to enjoy in City’s victory in the stadium where Simon Davies’ side will play on Wednesday.

2012 pre-season trip

Roberto Mancini’s City followed up their dramatic title success by beginning their pre-season in Innsbruck, Austria.

The Blues faced Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal, German side Dynamo Dresden and current Turkish champions Besiktas while putting in plenty of training ahead of the upcoming season.
