City fell behind early in the match but Lukas Nmecha’s scrambled equaliser gave them hope and took the match to penalties, where City would eventually bow out of the tournament.
Kongolo was naturally disappointed to have fallen at the play-off stage and insists that City will improve in the closing months of their Premier League 2 season.
He said: “It was a hard game for us, they pressed us really well and I think they stopped us playing the game we wanted to play. When it comes to penalties it can go both ways but unfortunately we lost.
“It’s different to the league because it was a one-off game and there was lots of pressure to win because it was either that or drop out.
“You could see that they had some good players and they were a good organised team but we are just looking at ourselves and what we need to improve on. It didn’t go as we wanted it to go tonight.
“It’s disappointing but we need to keep going in the league as that’s still going and we have a chance to do something important there.”
The Dutch youth international also praised City’s goalkeeper Daniel Grimshaw, who made a string of excellent saves to keep City in the tie.
“Grimmy kept us in the game a lot of times and he has played a really good game today. He even did really well with the penalties but that’s football,” he said.
