Joel Latibeaudiere believes winning the UEFA Youth League must be a priority for Manchester City U19s this season.

The young Blues are two points clear at the top of Group F after their opening two games and the defender says the squad are looking to deliver the type of success associated with a Club of City’s stature.

Last season’s U18 skipper was on target as Simon Davies’ team overcame Shakhtar Donetsk three goals to one at the Academy Stadium.

It followed the impressive 2-0 win over Feyenoord in the group stage opener and the 17-year-old asserts that City should be making an impact in the latter stages of the competition.

“We’re a confident team so we’re expecting to top the group,” he said. “We’ll do what we need to.

“Our aim is always to go all the way and win the competition. That’s what we’re expected to do.

“We’re at Manchester City. It’s a top club and we need to start winning things in Europe now, not just in England.”

In a change from the norm, Latibeaudiere was the central figure in a back three, as the manager diverted from his usual four-man defence.

It’s a role the England junior felt worked well, though it was his attacking prowess which will be remembered from this test against the Ukrainians.

Meeting a Phil Foden centre, he planted a header in the top corner to give City the lead on the stroke of half-time, ensuring their early dominance did not go without reward.

“We were slightly frustrated at half-time because we’d had nine attempts,” explained the youngster.

“To only get one and for it to come from a set piece, after having a lot of the play, was a bit disappointing.

“But we’re a patient team and mature as a group, so we knew the goals would come.”

And they did, but not without a fight, as Shakhtar rallied in the second period, despite Foden extending the advantage shortly after the break.

Like his manager, Latibeaudiere knows City will need to show greater in-game consistency if they are to fulfil their European aspirations, but takes heart from what was another competent performance.

“We weren’t as good in the second half and the manager’s told us we can’t just turn it on and off when we want.

“But overall we’re happy and we’re looking forward to playing Napoli in two weeks.”
