The U19 squad made it two wins out of two with a 3-1 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk and while the manager was satisfied with the result, he thinks the youngsters can go up another gear yet.
Joel Latibeaudiere and Phil Foden had given City a 2-0 lead before they allowed the visitors back into the game courtesy of Volodymyr Yakimets.
A late Taylor Richards strike sealed the three points, but Davies felt the game need not have been as close as it felt for periods in the second half.
“I’m hoping we learn from this because we made hard work of the game,” he said.
“I thought in the first half we were really strong and controlled the game, though we could have been a little more clinical.
“I expected us to do more in the second period, but we got scrappy and let them back into it.”
Despite that, Davies is understandably pleased to have a 100% record from the opening two fixtures and to already be sitting two points clear at the top of Group F.
His side impressed in spells and showed maturity beyond their years with their patient play, particularly when Shakhtar sat deep and compact in the first half.
The challenge now, he explains, is to maintain such standards for extended periods.
“The boys played well in patches. We were good in possession and we got into the final third really well, which is something we’ve worked on.
“We just needed a little more quality with the last pass and with our decision making, but they are young players, they are progressing well and there’s more to come from them.
“There’s things for us to work on and that’s what it’s all about. Manchester City has high targets and we have to keep pushing these players to be at the highest level.”
