On a disappointing night at the Sands Venue Stadium, the City youngsters went down to a 3-1 defeat in our last 16 tie.
City never truly recovered from a tough first half hour which saw the Iron score three times.
And though Doyle narrowed the deficit with a penalty in what was a much improved second half display, City also spurned a number of other excellent opportunities to signal the end of our EFL Trophy campaign.
And the 18-year-old believes he and his colleagues will digest the lessons and learn from the setback.
“Obviously, it is massively disappointing, and we are gutted to have gone out,” Doyle admitted.

“I think the first half killed us and we could have been a lot better in the first 30 minutes. We made a few mistakes though their first goal you can’t do much about.
“I think the second half we showed a bit more about what we are about but with the chances we create we should score.
“We can’t keep relying on free kicks or penalties we need to start scoring more and punish teams.
“We have had the problem of not punishing teams all season. We create a lot and sometimes we don’t finish – we need to be ruthless in both boxes.
“In Premier League 2, you have teams that pass the ball and press, but this tournament you are dealing with long balls and big strong men.
“We had dealt with it well, but at Scunthorpe we took our foot off the gas and we have to learn from it.
“At this moment we don’t think about the lessons learnt - we are just frustrated and gutted we are out - but obviously in the longer period of that we will understand these things happen in football.”
The defeat at the Sands Venue Stadium capped a whirlwind few days for the 18-year-old which has also seen him experience the full gamut of footballing emotions.
Doyle made his second senior appearance for the first team when he made his FA Cup bow in last Saturday’s 4-1 third round win over Port Vale.
Twenty-four hours later, he captained our EDS side to a 1-0 PL2 win over Liverpool and then joined teenage team-mate Taylor Harwood-Bellis with the visiting City fans for Tuesday’s 3-1 Carabao Cup semi-final win over Manchester United.
“When you play for first team it’s an unbelievable thing and something that you can’t take lightly,” Doyle added.
“It’s a massive occasion but, at my age, I’m busy learning from training with them.
“When you get to a game it’s brilliant but if I’m not involved with the first team I’ll play with the Under-23s.
“Whatever game I play that’s my main focus - Scunthorpe was my main focus on Wednesday but we couldn’t get the result.”
