After the game ended 0-0, both sides traded spot kicks with the difference coming from Kelvin Etuhu having his effort saved by Luke Steele, but Wigley was not disheartened by the overall display of his team.
“That’s penalties isn’t it?” says Steve. “I thought the first half we were the better team and they came into it in the final 20 minutes, had two or three chances, and I thought Kasper kept us in the game.
“Over the 90 minutes I thought the draw was a fair reflection of the game and unfortunately we’ve missed one penalty.”
For many of his charges, this would have been their first experience of penalty shoot-out at first hand, and Wigley is confident that the likes of the unlucky Etuhu will be able to use it to good effect the next time they step up to the plate in a shoot-out..
“I’m pleased young Kelvin stepped forward and was willing to take one and it’s a learning experience. I said to him ‘hopefully the next one you take will be in a cup final’.
“It was a good performance, we had a young side out, and I was pleased until about 20 minutes to go.
“I enjoyed the game but not the end result.”
