The manager admits he will attach greater importance this year to the season that lies ahead for the City second string.
Last year the Blues second team won the Manchester Senior Cup with a victory in the final over Manchester United while they just missed out on the League title.
It is not just the silverware that is important but the performance and the development of the players in the team.
New coach Steve Wigley will take command of the City reserves and the boss believes that his former Nottingham Forest team mate could turn out to be the best signing of the summer.
“Steve Wigley is the reserve team manager and I believe he could become my best signing of the summer,” said the boss.
“He is the link between the Academy and the senior squad and the most important thing for me is that he brings on the young players who are here already.
“The reserves take on a greater importance and they become a breeding ground for these younger players.
“Over the years players like Shaun Wright-Phillips have come through that route as have all the players that featured at the end of last season.
“Players like Willo Flood have got to do a job in the reserves and Steve Wigley has to teach them the game the way we wanted it played.
“He then has to decide to recommend them if he thinks they are good enough. If they are they will push through.”
