City’s Elite Development Squad go in search of a first NextGen Series win when they take on Fenerbahce on Thursday night.

Hyde FC’s Ewen Fields will once again play host to Attilio Lombardo’s side still hurting from their unfortunate 2-0 defeat to PSG a fortnight ago.

The Blues come up against a Fenerbahce side that recorded a point against Italian powerhouses Juventus in their first NextGen Series encounter in an entertaining 3-3 draw in Italy.

“It will be a difficult game [against Fenerbahce] we need to work hard and prepare for the game because we want to win,” said Lombardo.

“Fenerbahce drew against Juventus who are a really top team so we how tough it will be.”

Two goals from Nicolas Rajsel consigned the team to the opening night defeat against PSG but there were plenty of encouraging notes for City’s Italian boss, despite the result.

“I’m disappointed with the result but I can’t say anything negative about my guys,” Lombardo declared.

“We played well in the first half and had a great chance but in the second half we didn’t play as well and after we conceded the first goal we were less compact and we have to improve.”

One man who might well be charged with keeping out Fenerbahce captain Beykan Simsek who netted twice against Juventus is Kieran Kennedy, who was excellent in the EDS’ 2-2 draw against Liverpool.

Kennedy formed a solid partnership with Emyr Huws in that last league encounter and it’s clear that the defender relishes playing alongside the versatile Welsh u21 international.

Em’s a good player – he’s strong, quick and always covers me. We’ve known eachother for years now so we get along really well.

...Kieran Kennedy...

Huws has featured in the centre of midfield as well as centre half this season so far and has impressed in both positions, thanks to his physicality and reading of the game.

Against a lively, fleet footed opposition, the Huws/Kennedy axis will be vital if City are to register their first ever win in the NextGen Series.
