Two goals from Seko Fofana sandwiched either side of a Jordy Hiwula strike sealed a first three points for Patrick Vieira’s men on the road in the league this term.
With the increased demands of the European and domestic cup programme, this was the first u21 Barclays Premier League assignment for four weeks, and Vieira made three changes from the XI that started the 2-1 defeat to Chelsea.
Guidetti replaced the injured Marcos Lopes, Emyr Huws came in for George Evans, who has departed on loan for Crewe, and Adam Drury started in place of Ellis Plummer, who dropped to the bench.
City began brightly and were quick to exert authority over the hosts, seizing the majority of possession almost from the kick off.
Signs of an early goal began to emerge, and the Norwich keeper was forced to intercept Devante Cole’s attempted cross, while Fofana saw his long range effort saved.
Fofana’s excellent start was rewarded just minutes later, when he latched onto the end of Sinan Bytyqi’s clever pass and gleefully slotted the ball home to give the Sky Blues the lead their early dominance deserved.
Although clear cut chances were rare as the half wore on, City continued to enjoy the best of possession and territory and Albert Rusnak might have added a second shortly before the interval, but his shot flew over the bar.
Norwich were reduced to feeding off scraps, although Cameron Norman might have levelled the scores with a run from midfield but his eventual shot sailed wide of Ian Lawlor’s post.
Guidetti withdrew after 51 minutes as City seek to manage his return to be replaced by Hiwula, who took just six minutes to get his name on the scoresheet and double City’s advantage from Greg Leigh’s cross.
Credit to the Canaries, they refused to give up and Reece Hall-Johnson was a key architect in their best moves. Lawlor did well to get his hand to Toffolo’s cross, and the Norwich forward was first to react, although he struck the ball rather wildly and failed to hit the target.
Ten minutes later, his powerful shot was only just wide of the post.
At the other end, Hiwula forced an excellent save from the Norwich stopper with a well-placed header, before Fofana made sure of the points in style, dancing round the defender before stroking the ball into the back of the net.
Lawlor was called into action once more as the final whistle approached, deflecting Rod Young’s shot onto the post to preserve a welcome clean sheet.
Next up for the EDS is a Uefa Youth League clash with CSKA Moscow on Tuesday, before facing Stoke in the league on 21 November.
