Gael Clichy doesn’t mind if he has the occasional quiet afternoon.

If he does, it means the midfield and attack are probably making life difficult for the opposition and, understandably, that’s just fine by him.

“It’s great to play in a team like this,” he said. “We have great players, and at home, with the fans behind us, it seems to work better than it does away.

“We know what we have to do, to do our own thing and try not to lose points at home. Taking game after game will be a key point for us and hopefully we can now improve our away record.

“I don’t see why we won’t be there or thereabouts at the end of the season.”.

Clichy has also been impressed by his international and club team-mate Samir Nasri, though he admits his form this season is no surprise.

“I have known Samir for a few years now and I am not surprised that he is doing well - not just yesterday from the start of the season,” said Clichy.

“Sometimes he has had tough luck, but David Silva has been out and he got a run of a few games in a row. Some people say you need to keep a player’s legs fresh but I believe that the more games you play the better you get and the more your confidence grows.

Samir has always had this quality and the fact that he has been playing for a few months shows through his form. When he is like this he is hard to play against but great to play with

“In this team, whoever plays does their best for the team, but we can give credit to Samir because he had a nice day.”

Now in his third season with the Blues, Clichy is back to somewhere near his best and is likely to clock up a century of appearances for City in the New Year.

He accepts, however, there will be occasions when he has to take his turn out of the team as the season progresses.

The France international added: “I have been here many years now and played many games, season after season, so of course I want to play as much as possible. But it is the manager’s call and you have to accept it - we have quality players and if we have to rotate, we rotate.

“The only thing I can say is that each individual has to give everything he has, because no player is bigger than the club.

“It’s the same for everyone, if you look at all the big teams. You can rotate some players, but the more you play as a team and individually you get better.

That doesn’t just apply to me or Samir - the more you play the better you are. I am happy, but overall mostly happy with the way we played - we need to be in this form until the end of the season

“Now we need to go away from home and make sure we start to pick up points. You have to look at the positive side - even if we lost against Cardiff, Aston Villa and Sunderland away, we still managed to play better than the opposition.

“Maybe we need to be more focused in the last pass, the last moment, in the box, and score the first goal. When you score the first goal, the game is different.

“But this is a new team with a new manager and new players and we are only going to get better. We are confident it will get better, hopefully starting on Wednesday at West Brom.”
