The versatile player, who could operate both in defence and midfield, scored in all but two of the rounds in the competition that season.
But, the Manchester born man deemed his 100th minute free-kick at Villa Park as the most important goal he ever scored for the Blues.
Speaking to Citytv in 2011, he recalled scoring the famous goal: “What I remember is actually what occurred before the free-kick was actually taken,” he said.
“When the game ended on 90 minutes, Eric Gates was walking off the pitch with his boots underneath his arm and I told him there were 30 minutes of extra-time to be played.
“He said, ‘”You can have it!’” I think he was just so shattered and everyone was on the day!
“When I hit the free-kick, I knew I’d struck it well, it’s like a golf shot when you know you’ve hit it nicely.
“But there was no-one more surprised than me when it went in, believe you me!”
