There weren’t too many strikers capable of catching out Peter Schmeichel in his heyday but Uwe Rosler managed it with aplomb in 1996.

Though City went on to lose the fifth round tie against Manchester United on 18 April, Rosler did give the away supporters cause to dream of FA Cup glory when he gave his side the lead.

Uwe broke the United offside trap and ran onto a measured Georgi Kinkladze through ball which drew Schmeichel off his line, paving the way for a sublime piece of improvisation from the German to deftly chip over the onrushing keeper.

A highly controversial Eric Cantona penalty on the stroke of half-time and a late Lee Sharpe volley eventually consigned City to the FA Cup exit and the heartbreak wasn’t over for that season.

United went on to lift that season’s FA Cup after winning a dismal final against Liverpool which is now best remembered for suits, while City were relegated from the Premier League for the first time.

Still, it was a nice goal...
