Samir Nasri believes the hard work is just beginning in the Champions League after the Sky Blues guaranteed progress from Group D, but also believes City can be as good as anyone left in the competition.

The Frenchman, at his dazzling best during the Sky Blues’ 5-2 win over CSKA Moscow, set up two more goals and is already a contender for Player of the Season if he maintains the form he’s shown so far this campaign.

For now, however, he is intent on enjoying the moment.

“This is something that we really wanted to do for the past three years and we did it tonight so we are very happy,” grinned Nasri.

“It’s a big achievement for the club because this is the first time we’ve gone beyond the group stages so we’re really happy, but there is still a long way to go. A club like Manchester City isn’t just going to be happy reaching the last 16; we want to get as far as we possibly can in this competition.

Now we’ll focus on the Premier League but on paper, we have as much quality as Real Madrid, Barcelona, Arsenal and United

“As a team, we’ve progressed and even if the past two seasons have been tough and we’ve had difficult groups, if we work as a team, we have time to get better and better because the next round isn’t until February.

“Everyone played with lots of confidence this evening and we have a manager who tells us what is good and what is bad, so we’ve moved on as individuals and as a team.

“Personally, I’m very happy and I think that is showing in my game. I feel loved and I’m trying my best each time I go out so it’s all positive.”
