Aleksandar Kolarov admits City may not have been at their best defensively so far this season – but he believes it is only teething problems.

With Manuel Pellegrini keen to implement his own methods of defending, the Blues haven’t quite been themselves at the back in certain games, but Kolarov says once everyone is used to the new tactics, things will blossom.

“We are still getting used to the new coach,” said Kolarov. “There is a change in our style but I think we can do much better than last season. We’ll be looking to do well in the Premier League and Champions League this time.

“We are working a lot on the defence and I feel like we are improving every day. I think as we get used to the manager’s thinking we will be playing at a high level.”

Kolarov was the subject of constant Press speculation during the summer linking him with a move away from the Blues, but the Serbia star, who scored a spectacular goal against Wales in midweek, has maintained he wants to play for City.

“I’ve always said I was happy here and nothing has changed,” he said. “I am a professional and I will be looking to win something this year with City. “There were a lot of stories in the papers over the summer but I never said that I wanted to go.

“I have two more years on my contract at City so my only focus now is to work hard in training and when I get the chance to play, to do my best and show the manager what I can do.

“Now we have about three weeks until the next break with the national team and I think we have seven games to play during that time so there will be opportunities. We’ve got a lot of good players and I’m sure we will all get a chance to play.

“I am working hard every day but I will respect the decision of the coach whether I play or not - I always give my best.”
