“We played with two really good strikers who kept the United defence busy for long periods, but most of all I think we kept calm at the right moments.
“Was this a statement of intent? No. I think you make a statement over the course of the season rather than in one game, but this was a great performance and a special day – now we need to win our next game and carry on from there.”
Alvaro Negredo enjoyed his first Manchester derby, believing it was the level of City’s display rather an inept United performance that was the key to the win. He said: “I think it was the intensity of our performance more than anything else.
“We were strong and pressed hard and we got our rewards. I remember watching the 6-1 win at Old Trafford over lunch in Spain and it is a very happy memory. Was this better? Maybe it was more beautiful than that game because we were at home this time. I’m very happy.”
Yaya Toure added: “When we came out and scored straight after the break it was the perfect time and I think our strikers were superb all afternoon.
“As for my goal, I can’t recall scoring with my knee before but I’m not complaining! I was just in the right position at the right time and took up a good position in the box.”
