Edin Dzeko broke the deadlock just after half-time to send City on their way to a 3-0 victory in the Czech Republic.
The Bosnian slotted home the first goal after excellent work from Sergio Aguero on the left after 48 minutes.
“We had some chances to score in the first-half but didn’t,” Edin declared after the match.
“Then I scored and from there it was much easier for us.
“It’s the perfect start – the last two years we didn’t get the win in our first game but we did today.
“Every team is a strong team in the Champions League and Plzen showed how they can play football, especially in the first-half, so we are happy to get the three points.”
...Edin Dzeko...
Dzeko was preferred to Alvaro Negredo in the City attack for matchday one but the 27-year old is well aware that every player in the squad will have to play a part if the Blues are to be successful on all fronts this season.
“I already said before the season started that I think we have a very good squad – we’ve bought a lot of quality in over the summer,” he reasoned.
“There’s a lot of games until the end of the season and everyone will get a chance to play.”
Just five minutes after Dzeko opened the scoring, Yaya Toure weighed in with a quite incredible 25-yard strike which will surely stand among the best goals of the tournament at the end of the season.
The Ivorian admitted that it was one of the best goals of his glittering career after the game and called upon his teammates to keep up the momentum in this year’s competition.
“I hope that this year will be better than what’s come before,” Toure said.
“The last two or three years were disappointing but we have to improve, it’s important for us to prove to the fans who love Manchester City that this year is going to be our year.
...Yaya Toure...
“The most important target is to reach the knockout rounds of the Champions League but we know that this is always a hard competition.
“We had the desire to win the game and always in this competition you have to step up to get the three points. Away, especially, it’s very hard.
“The first half was very difficult but Edin got the first goal and that made it much easier.
“To be honest, I think my goal was a nice goal but I’m just happy that it helped the team to win.”
