For a footballer, a World Cup in your home country is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

After receiving his first international call-up in nearly two years, it’s a chance that Fernandinho intends to grasp with both hands.

The 28-year old’s scintillating form in his first six months in the Premier League has convinced Brazil boss Luis Felipe Scolari to call up the midfielder to the squad travelling to Johannesburg for a friendly against South Africa next month.

“I’m very proud to have received the call and I’m very excited at the prospect of representing my country again,” Fernandinho said after receiving the news.

“It’s a great opportunity for me and I’m happy to have this chance to show what I can do.”

...Fernandinho...

Fernandinho’s last international appearance was in a friendly against Bosnia-Herzegovina in February 2012, one of five caps he’s earned for the Seleção.

Brazil take on South Africa on Wednesday 5 March 2014 at 17:00 (BST) in their penultimate friendly before the World Cup gets under way in June.

We’ll bring you a full report on how Fernandinho gets on in Johannesburg, as well as updates on all of our other international players in action on that FIFA date.
