There was good news for our MLS sister club on Thursday afternoon as Frank Lampard was unveiled as NYCFC’s latest signing.

The England international joins David Villa, Josh Saunders and Jeb Brovsky to become New York City FC’s fourth signing ahead of their 2015 kick-off.

Lampard, Chelsea’s all-time record goalscorer, will play for Jason Kreis’s side when their season gets under way in Spring.

He will wear the no.8 shirt.

“I am really excited about joining New York City and helping to build something special in what is one of the sporting capitals of the world,” declared the durable fan favourite.

“I am flattered to think I will be part of history being made in the Five Boroughs and I am looking forward to getting to know New Yorkers and tapping into their vibrancy and passion for the game. I just cant wait to get started.

“It is going to be an exhilarating challenge for all of us; creating this magnificent, go-ahead Club in an MLS that is growing in popularity and ability year on year.

“Hopefully my experience can help us create an impact in my first season. I love a challenge and being competitive and I know everyone at NYCFC does too. I am sure we will make the city proud.”

Frank scored 211 goals in his 13-year stay at Stamford Bridge, winning the Barclays Premier League three times, the FA Cup on four occasions and the UEFA Champions League in 2011/12.

He also picked up two League Cups and the UEFA Europa League titles.

Lampard’s new boss, Jason Kreis, is delighted to have captured a player of Frank’s skill and experience.

“I am really looking forward to working with Frank,” Kreis declared. “His leadership and experience is perfect for a new Club like ours.

“He is a rare talent, one that scores lots goals from midfield, yet is also a disciplined defender and someone who reads the game brilliantly.

“Frank has a tremendous zest and appetite for the game and that will be an enormous help not only to me and the coaching staff but also the rest of the players, particularly the younger ones who can look up to Frank and attempt to emulate his achievements.

“He has just come from the World Cup and still very much at the top of his game. His desire and work ethic will be infectious.”

Lampard has earned 106 caps for England, scoring 29 goals and appearing in three World Cups and two European Championships.

He was named Football Writers Footballer of the Year in 2005, won UEFA’s Midfielder of the Year award in 2008 and claimed the PFA’s Fan Player of the Year title in 2005.

Frank started his career at West Ham United where he came through the youth system before going on to amass 187 games in all competitions for the Hammers.

In 2001, he joined Chelsea for a reported £11m where he would go on to establish himself among the club’s all-time greats.

The Romford-born midfielder regularly scored more than 20 goals from midfield for the London club and he eventually broke Bobby Tambling’s long-standing goalscoring record on 11 May 2013 with his second goal in a 3-1 win over Aston Villa.

Last season, he played 40 games for Chelsea and scored eight goals.

NYCFC’s Sporting Director Claudio Reyna, added: “I am delighted Frank has joined us, he was an obvious choice.

“I have played against him many times and can vouch for his quality. Frank is one of the best midfielders to have played the modern game, a legend in England and hopefully he will become one here, too.”
