It was a historic day for all involved with Melbourne City Football Club as the Hyundai A-League side kicked-off for the very first time since changing names back in June this year.

Anticipation ahead of the opening game of the season against Sydney FC at the Allianz Stadium was huge with Spanish superstar David Villa joining up with his team mates for the first time last week to commence his loan move from New York City FC.

The legendary striker had to initially settle for a place on the bench against Sydney, ironically nicknamed the Sky Blues, however following a fairly even first half, Villa made his debut as an early second half substitute.

Corey Gameiro broke the deadlock, giving Sydney the lead after 54 minutes curling an effort past Andrew Redmayne however up stepped David Villa to level the scores with a well-placed strike following Damian Duff’s assist - couldn’t have been scripted any better, really!

Mate Dugandzic went close soon after with Melbourne visibly lifted by Villa’s presence however a winning goal proved elusive and City would take home a well-deserved point from the game and plenty to build upon.
