David Villa has spoken of his desire to leave Melbourne City supporters with happy memories of his stay in Australia.

The Spain legend is fit and raring to go having taken part in his first training session with the A-League club who begin their new life against Sydney FC at the Allianz this weekend.

Villa can play up to 10 games for Melbourne after signing as a guest player from sister club New York City FC, where he has a three-year contract.

Ironically, the 32-year-old striker’s last match was against Australia where he scored in his final appearance for La Roja, though the former Barcelona and Valencia star has been preparing for some time for his A-League debut.

“I feel good,” Villa told a press conference in Melbourne. “I’m a little bit tired from the long trip, but focused on the game and getting to know my team-mates.

“I feel prepared and I’ve been working hard. I’d like for the fans across Australia to have good memories and to enjoy my performances for Melbourne City.”

Head Coach John van’t Schip admitted he was thrilled to have Villa available for the opening game on Saturday, saying: “The whole club is excited that David has arrived, we are here to help him, he is here to help us.

“This morning in training he looked really sharp and fresh, we know how the jet lag works, we have to take that into consideration this week.

“David is really focused on integrating into the way we want to play, getting to know the group and the players. He is really professional and we’re delighted to have him.”
