Manuel Pellegrini's right-hand man Ruben Cousillas admits that defeat to Bayern Munich was hard to take but he still has faith that City can challenge for Group E's top spot.

Cousillas, the man in the dugout due to Pellegrini’s touchline ban, believes that there will be plenty of twists and turns to come in the remaining five games.

Jerome Boateng’s last minute strike denied City what would have been a hard-earned point but there were plenty of positives to take, according to City’s Assistant Manager.

AS Roma defeated CSKA Moscow 5-1 in the night’s other game, setting up a pivotal encounter with the Italian side at the Etihad on match day two.

“It’s the first game - we have only just begun,” he said. “There are many games ahead and we don’t have to be too sad.

“We can still become first in the group.

“Of course, it’s not good to start with a defeat, but there are five games ahead so it means it depends on us.

“The team is really strong at home.

“I’m convinced Roma has a lot of quality. It’s a really difficult group, but I’m sure we are going to make it.”

Cousillas also heaped praise on City’s Man of the Match, Joe Hart, after the England stopper defied Bayern time and time again with an inspired display in goal.

“We made a really good game and also good entertainment for the people,” Cousillas reflected. “We had two teams that tried to make goals.

“To concede in the last minute was frustrating.

“They had a lot of chances to score, but Joe Hart played really well.

“We also had three or four chances to score.”

Bayern boss Pep Guardiola was full of praise for City, sharing his belief that the English champions are in with a chance of winning the competition.

He described City as one of the best teams in the continent.

“My opinion is that there are six, seven, eight teams that can win it,” he declared. “It’s not like before when there were two or three.

“Manchester City are one of them. They can win because I know the quality of their players, their history and their level.

“I saw them play against Arsenal. They played better than them.

“They have lots of big big players.

“That’s why I’m so happy we won against one of the best teams in Europe.”
