The England midfielder made it three goals in two games with a brace against Sheffield Wednesday and the City boss couldn’t hide his admiration of the evergreen star.
“Frank is a very important player and he proved that again tonight,” said the boss. “I would rather have selection problems because I have too many good players than not enough so I hope he continues to play as well.
“He showed how important he can be for us against Chelsea and he did the same again tonight. He is 36 now and maybe he can’t play three games in a week anymore but he knows how to play football and he is a top player.”
Responding to questions about whether the champions could extend Lampard’s stay at the Etihad, Pellegrini said: “We will see what happens in January. The decision is not final and we have two or three months to decide but I don’t think that is the most important thing right now.
When the time comes, we will make a decision that is right for the club and for the player. We must talk about a lot of things but nothing is impossible
...Manuel Pellegrini...
The boss admitted a shift up in gears was the probably the reason for the second-half blitz of goals, adding: “I think we had a change of attitude in the second half and we were more aggressive and direct. Obviously when Sheffield Wednesday went down to ten-men it was easier for us.
“I think the style of play after the break was more important after half-time than the amount of goals we scored.”
Pellegrini also had praise foe teenager Jose Pozo and James Milner: “Pozo is a very promising young player who we believe in.,” he said.
“Last season he was unlucky with injuries and it took him time to get back to where he was but he’s done really well recently and he is a very good prospect and I’m sure we’ll see more of him in the weeks and months ahead.
“As for James, I know what he is capable of so his current form doesn’t surprise me because he gives 100% every time he plays.
“He is a great professional and though he maybe hasn’t started as much as he would have liked in the past year and it was frustrating for him but now he is in the team and I am very happy for him.”
