The trio of City stars on international duty on Monday evening all had reason to be pleased with their night's work.

David Silva was at his magical best for deposed world champions Spain as they thrashed Macedonia 5-1 in Valencia to end a dismal summer on a high.

The City play-maker scored Spain’s fourth of the evening on 50 minutes and then set up Pedro in the dying minutes to complete the rout.

Meanwhile England silenced their critics with a polished 2-0 win away to Switzerland.

Joe Hart made two excellent saves - one in each half - when scores were still level and James Milner was a 73rd-minute sub for Jack Wilshere with the City midfielder winning his 50th cap.

Two goals from Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck on 58 and 90 minutes gave Roy Hodgson’s side the perfect start to their European Championships campaign.

Worryingly, Stevan Jovetic missed Montenegro’s 2-0 win over Moldova with injury.

Tuesday saw Edin Dzeko’s Bosnia suprisingly beaten 2-1 at home to Cyprus while on Wednesday, Fernandinho came on as a 74th-minute sub as Brazil beat Ecuador 1-0 but Yaya Toure’s Ivory Coast were thrashed 4-1 away to Cameroon - Yaya scored the Elephants’ goal to make it 1-1.

Elsewhere, Karim Rekik played for Holland Under-21s but was on the losing side to a Slovakia side who had Albert Rusnak as an unused sub in the 1-0 win in Tilburg.
