Monchengladbach qualified automatically for the Champions League this term after being frustrated two years’ ago when they were knocked out by Dinamo Kiev in the pre-group stage qualifiers.
They have made the Europa League Round of 32 twice in the last three years, and fans of the team in the 1970s will have rather fond memories of that competition in its previous guise as the UEFA Cup. Monchengladbach won the UEFA Cup twice in that decade, including in 1979 when they knocked out City on the way to the final.
