The Blues have now won eight games on the bounce having taken maximum points from the final six games of last season and won their opening two matches this term.
The current MCFC record is nine wins in a row, set way back in 1912 and never bettered since.
In 1911/12, the Blues had looked set for relegation from the top flight having won none of the first 13 matches and just four of the first 29.
A remarkable end to the campaign saw Harry Newbould’s side win eight and draw one of the last 10 games to escape relegation by just one point.
The final four matches against Spurs, Sheffield Wednesday, Bury and Middlesbrough had all been victories and though Newbould left City at the end of the campaign, new boss Ernest Mangnall took the momentum into the 1912/13 season.
The Blues beat Notts County, Manchester United and Aston Villa all by a score of 1-0 before seeing off Liverpool 2-1 and Bolton Wanderers 2-0 to make it nine league wins in a row before a 1-1 draw with Sheffield United ended the sequence.
Fast forward 103 years and City are on the brink of equalling that run with victories again spanning two seasons.
After the 4-2 defeat to Manchester United last April, Manuel Pellegrini’s men showed genuine strength of character to end the campaign in blistering form.
After beating West Ham United and Aston Villa at the Etihad, the Blues – under pressure to finish in the top four – then recorded a gritty 1-0 win over Tottenham before dishing out comprehensive victories over QPR and Swansea and then signing off the 2014/15 season with a 2-0 win over Southampton.
Six wins to end the campaign in style was followed with an impressive first-day 2015/16 victory at West Brom and then Pellegrini’s side made it eight wins in a row with the dismantling of champions Chelsea at the Etihad.
Now a resurgent Everton stand in the way of equalling the Blues’ long-standing win sequence record – though with just two wins in 17 visits stretching back to 1993, City know they will need to be at their very best to leave Goodison Park with a chance of breaking the record against Watford a week later.
