There were contrasting fortunes for City's FIFA U-20 World Cup representatives on Thursday morning with Portugal progressing but Nigeria crashing out.

Attacking midfielder Marcos Lopes played 90 minutes as Portugal defeated host nation New Zealand to reach the last eight of the competition at Hamilton’s Waikato Stadium.

Raphael Guzzo opened the scoring for Portugal before substitute Stuart Holthusen equalised against the run of play.

The home crowd were to be silenced though, with Gelson Martins producing a stylish winner after 87 minutes, the match ending 2-1. Portugal will now face Brazil in the last eight on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Kelechi Iheanacho and Chidiebere Nwakali are on their way home after Germany defeated Nigeria 1-0 in Christchurch.

Levin Oztunali’s first-half goal proved the match winner, with Nwakali’s late appearance off the bench in vain for the Flying Eagles. Iheanacho was an unused substitute.
