Skipper Vincent Kompany believes City’s mouth-watering pre-season clash with Real Madrid can set an early benchmark for the 2015/16 campaign.

The Belgian defender has become a regular sight at City Football Academy in June, putting in a series of punishing sprint and endurance work-outs to hone his fitness before the squad jets out to Australia for the pre-season tour.

City will play sister club Melbourne City on the Gold Coast before International Champions Cup games against Roma and then Real Madrid at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

With City desperate to add more silverware in 2015/16, Kompany believes the Real Madrid game in particular with provide a reminder of the Club’s long term goals.

Kompany told www.mcfc.co.uk: “You want to measure your level at that time. I wouldn’t take too much from the result but you always see some young players come through in those (pre-season) games, you see a different shape, different players standing up, so it’s always an exciting time, and for the fans as you see how the team is shaping up for the new season.

“Ever since I’ve been at the club we’ve always tried to make the gap between the top clubs like Real Madrid smaller and in some way achieved it, but it’d be nice now to bridge that gap.

He added: “We’re not too far off but there is still a way to go.”

While many of his team-mates have been or are in international action across the globe, Kompany’s recent national team suspension means has seen him putting in a summer shift in Manchester.

“This is what I live for,” he reflected. “Every time I spend away from the club is a moment where I want to be back on the pitch.

“You need your holidays, I was suspended from national team so I had a few more holidays than the rest of the guys, so I’m giving myself the chance to come back in the exact condition I want to be before the start of the season.”
