David Silva says City can still progress to the last eight of the Champions League, despite going to the Nou Camp 2-1 down.

The Blues have been far from their best in recent weeks with the latest set-back at Burnley hardly the best preparation for arguably the biggest game of the season so far.

But Silva believes if City can find something close to their best form, the tie is far from over and there is no reason why a victory over Barcelona can’t be achieved.

“Everybody wrote Schalke off before they played Real Madrid but they won 4-3 and could have scored again which would have put them through – nobody predicted that,” said Silva.

“Not many thought PSG could beat Chelsea, especially with only ten men for so long so I know that everything can happen, not only in the Champions League but in every game.

“Everyone is expecting Barca to go through but hopefully we can give a strong performance.

We don’t have any kind of pressure on us because we are behind and playing away

Silva accepts that scoring at least two goals without reply against the in-form Catalans is a big ask, but City have already twice recovered from seemingly hopeless positions in the Champions League against Bayern Munich and then away to Roma.

“We need this kind of mentality we showed in those games,” he said, “The most important thing is not to concede a goal because obviously things then become more difficult.

“We played well in the second leg against Barca last season and played with freedom so we will see.”

With 10 Premier League goals already this season, Silva is enjoying his best campaign of his career in terms of goals – he is yet to score in the Champions League this season but Wednesday night could be the perfect time to open his account.

“I have played closer to the box in a more advanced position this season and that’s why I’m scoring goals,” he said.

“It’s more about the team than individuals. If we are good as a group we can make the difference. I always have freedom in the pitch but now we need all the players at their best if we are to go through”.

Finally, the crowd idol confirmed he wants to win many more trophies with the Blues and will continue to mesmerise opposition defences in sky blue for many years to come.

I have four more years on my contract and I’m very happy here - I have always said that

“The way the supporters are with me is something I’m very proud of and it inspires me to play my best and I’m humbled to have that kind of appreciation every time I play.”
