With 25 strikes to date, Kun is five goals clear of the chasing pack with Tottenham’s Harry Kane the nearest challenger on 20 goals.
It will be only the second time a City striker has won the coveted award with fellow Argentine Carlos Tevez achieving the feat in 2010/11.
The award will again raise questions of how Sergio could be left out of the PFA Team of the Year for the fourth year running, but will be reward for yet another superb campaign for the 26-year-old.
Kun began his scoring exploits at Newcastle with a crucial killer goal on 90 minutes at St James’ Park with the hosts pressing for an equaliser and he then found the net in the 3-1 win over Liverpool during the first Etihad Stadium game of the new season – both times coming on a substitute.
He was off and running and the goals continued to flow in the games that followed.
In October, he bagged all four goals in the 4-1 win over Spurs during which he scored two first-half penalties and he began November with the winning goal in the first Manchester derby of the season as he continued to pile misery on the Reds
...Golden Boot for Kun?...
After bagging two more in a 2-2 draw with QPR, he scored a Champions League hat-trick against Bayern Munich and then scored another couple in the 4-1 win at Sunderland where he looked in the form of his life.
Then, a twisted knee in the opening moments of the home game with Everton and Kun was side-lined for the next eight games. It was a devastating blow for Sergio who left the pitch in tears, knowing injury had again disrupted what promised to be his best season ever.
Incredibly, City would play 13 games without Aguero on the score-sheet as he convalesced and then slowly found his rhythm again with 4-1 win at Stoke City. Though he was on target against Newcastle in the next game and again against Barcelona, he then went on a barren run of six games through March without a goal.
That spell ended with two goals at Old Trafford – his 99th and 100th for the Club – which was also the beginning of an explosive end to the campaign which saw him add another against West Ham and further efforts against Aston Villa and Spurs.
A hat-trick against QPR saw him pull clear of the pack in the race for the Golden Boot and his tally of 31 for the season in all competitions is his best yet.
So the Golden Boot is almost Sergio’s and will be presented to him after Sunday’s game with the Saints after the Premier League – barring an avalanche of goals elsewhere!
