Torrential rain in Buenos Aires put paid to Argentina’s World Cup qualifying ‘Superclasico’ clash with Brazil last night.

With hail and lightning adding to the poor conditions, the game was postponed with less than an hour to go before kick-off.

The Antonio Vespucio Liberti stadium was waterlogged and deemed unplayable by officials – though the game has been re-scheduled for midnight tonight (GMT) with the Blues likely to provide at least three players.

Martin Demichelis and Nicolas Otamendi are expected to start in the heart of the Albiceleste defence, with Fernandinho likely to be named in central midfield for Brazil.

With the hosts missing Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero, Pablo Zabaleta and Carlos Tevez, the Argentina squad has been severely weakened ahead of what is a crucial game against their oldest rivals

“We met with match officials and the Argentine representatives and there’s no way the game could go ahead,” said assistant Brazil coach Gilmar Rinaldi.

“It wouldn’t just be hard to play good football, there is hail and lightning and the forecast is that it will get worse.”

Argentina have failed to win their last three games and haven’t scored for more than three hours of international football and know further set-backs against Brazil and Colombia could make qualification difficult.

With Ecuador already eight points ahead and Chile six points in front, the injury crisis couldn’t have come at a worse time for Argentina coach Gerardo Martino with Brazil boosted by the return of in-form Barcelona striker Neymar.
