Sergio Aguero admits he doesn’t know for sure whether he will be ready for the visit of Liverpool, but whatever happens, it won’t be for the want of trying.

City’s leading scorer has missed the last seven games due to an injury sustained while on duty with Argentina at the start of last month.

After scoring five goals in 20 minutes against Newcastle United and hitting peak form, Aguero has been on the side-lines ever since.

But having returned to full training this week, he is building up his fitness ahead of the visit of the Merseysiders as the Blues’ list of injured stars steadily improves.

“I do hope I can play in this game,” said Kun. “I’m doing everything in my power to get to the match in top condition.

Sergio Aguero second goal

“It’s been a frustrating time. Obviously the game against Newcastle was special because it’s not every week you get to score five goals in one game,

“The only other occasion I remember scoring five in a single match was when I was 12!

“I was playing in the pre-youth divisions for Independiente and it was the first important tournament that I’d participated in. We played against a local team and won 7-0 and I scored five times but it doesn’t happen too often, does it?

“I managed to score four against Tottenham last season, which was the most I’d scored as a professional up to that point.”

Aguero admits it will feel a little odd if he comes up against former team-mate James Milner on Saturday – though the Liverpool midfielder is also racing against time to face the Blues.

Milner action

“Regarding James, I read that, unfortunately, he suffered an injury playing for England.” He said. “I hope he’s able to recover. He’s a great player though it will be odd to see him wearing another team’s colours.

“He is a true professional and I’m sure he’s going to come against us with everything he’s got. It should be a great game. Jürgen Klopp has come in and he’s a great addition to the Premier League.

“I’ve stated before that it’s a good thing that the best players and managers come to England – it makes it one of the most competitive tournaments in the whole world.

“Klopp did a great job at Dortmund and that secured his spot in the Premier League. I’m sure he’ll have the time he needs to adapt.

“The truth is playing against tougher opponents makes us all better at our jobs.”
