The midfielder revealed he was honoured to be nominated in a year when he led the Ivory Coast to their first Africa Cup of Nations trophy since 1992, finally fulfilling what many saw as the destiny of the country’s ‘golden generation’.

Said Yaya: “For me I feel like a lucky guy. When I go home and my kids or my friends ask me about the trophies, like the BBC African Footballer Year in 2013 it makes me feel very special and proud.

“Because when I was a kid I worked so hard, all my mentality was to be a winning guy. My mentality was always about winning things. Working hard to win trophies and collect trophies.”

The award caps off a brilliant calendar year for Toure, who lifted the Cup of Nations trophy as captain after a campaign in which he provided much of the midfield energy for Ivory Coast and scored a crucial goal in the tournament’s semi-final.

In addition to his exploits on the international stage has continued to excel in a City shirt, and was one of only three players at the club to reach double figures for goals in 2014/15 despite missing nearly two months away with his country.

Now into his sixth season at the club, he also spoke of how happy he is with life in Manchester.

He added: “2015 was amazing because I won the Africa Cup of Nations with my brother and I lifted the trophy as Captain. So much hard work went into it. It’s unbelievable. It’s something that I will never forget.”

“And I’m very happy at Manchester City and very happy with the fans here. We have something to build here and something to create. My presence at this club is about that.”
