His introduction helped to turn the game in City’s favour on Wednesday night and now Jesus Navas is making plans for the Magpies.

The former Sevilla man was not surprised by Newcastle’s performance in their 2-2 draw at Chelsea last time out and is warning that Steve McClaren’s men can cause real problems for the home side on Saturday afternoon.

In a season where City have already been beaten by West Ham at the Etihad Stadium, it’s a message that will be well-heeded by Jesus’s teammates this weekend.

“It’s never a surprise when any team does well in this league,” Navas declared.

“It’s the best league in the world, the most competitive league in the world.

“Any team and every team will make life difficult for you. We know that they’re going to come here and do the same. It will be tough and we will have to try very, very hard to get those three points again.

“I think there are always quite a few teams who will be involved there and there abouts near the top of the league.

“There are lots of teams who can cause problems for us and that’s why we need to remain focused on our own games and concentrated on getting as many sets of three points as we can in every game that we go into.”

City’s win over Borussia Monchengladbach was vital in igniting hopes of reaching the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League for the third season in a row.

Navas believes that the win could carry even greater significance in propelling the Blues back onto another winning run following defeats to Juventus, West Ham and Spurs.

“I think when you pick up your first set of three points in the Champions League it’s good news for the team and I think now as a group it’s going to give us lots of confidence going into the rest of the group stage fixtures,” Jesus stated.

“I think it’s important that we have confidence in ourselves. I certainly feel that we do have that. One of the things the manager does is give us lots of confidence approaching games.

“I think it’s very important that we all believe and feel very important as part of that overall squad. We all know that we can feature and play an important role in games and the manager re-enforces that.”

The Spanish winger has now made more than 100 appearances for City since joining from Sevilla in 2013 and it’s an achievement he’s proud of.

He added: “I am very happy and very proud at the same time.

“I would say that from the first day that I got here I have been treated really, really well.

“People have accepted me and given me confidence - I am very happy with the way I get on with all my teammates and the way they treat me and have accepted me.”
