Yaya Toure felt that fortune did not smile his side in their opening UEFA Champions League game against Juventus.

The Ivorian praised the visitors’ stubborn residence but he felt as though it was a game that City deserved to win.

It had looked rosy for the Blues when Giorgio Chiellini headed past his own goalkeeper ten minutes into the second period but goals from Mario Mandzukic and Alvaro Morata condemned the home team to a first defeat of the season.

After the game, Yaya called upon himself and his teammates to bounce back against Borussia Monchengladbach next time out.

“It was a disappointing game,” he reflected.

“The Italian team played very well, defended very well and I think they’ve been lucky. I don’t think we played that bad.

“It can happen in football. We just have to be strong and try to bounce back in the Champions League.”

Toure felt as though it was a failure to convert chances that prevented City from registering a win on the opening night of continental competition.

Raheem Sterling, Wilfried Bony and David Silva all had presentable opportunities to score but they were met by a goalkeeper at the very top of his game.

Perhaps the pivotal moment of the game arrived on the hour mark, just two minutes after City’s goal, when Gianluigi Buffon pulled off a miracle double save to keep Juventus in the game.

Had that gone in, at that stage of the game, it could have all been so different.

Toure added: “We just missed a lot today, we had a couple of chances and what we have to do is learn from Europe and try to do better next time.”
