City new boy the team performance was not what was hoped for, but another goal from the Belgian was at least a bright spot, clinically taken on the counter attack. He is already the club’s leading scorer in all competitions this season - the challenge has been laid down!
Premier League danger
City’s electric start of five wins from five had the pundits purring and verbally adorning the Premier League trophy with sky blue ribbons. It was never going to be so straight forward. Every team in the English top flight is capable of springing a surprise, and there will be be many twists and turns between now and May.
Youth in the pipeline
Young striker Patrick Roberts continued his encouraging start at the club by following up his League Cup appearance with a City Premier League debut. George Evans and Brandon Barker gave the bench an even more youthful look, and although injuries played their part in selection, it is still heartening to see a glimpse of the future being blooded.
Triumph and despair
Following City’s record-breaking winning streak, the past two weeks has been a stark setback. Boss Manuel Pellegrini is always keen to keep things in perspective though. He played down the winning run by reminding everyone that six of the results came at the end of last season, and that the trophies are what count. By the same logic, defeats - concerning though they are - at this stage of the campaign are not fatal. City have already proved their quality this season, now is the time to stick to priniples and regain the momentum.
Take a break
City have suffered badly with injuries early in the season. Pablo Zabaleta, Gael Clichy, Vincent Kompany, Eliaquim Mangala, Fabian Delph, Sergio Aguero, David Silva, Fernando, Joe Hart, Samir Nasri, Wilfried Bony, Kelechi Iheanacho and Yaya Toure have all suffered setbacks, which will take its toll on any team. After Wednesday’s game at Borussia Monchengladbach and Newcastle at home on Saturday, there is a gap of 14 days in October before the home game against Bournemouth. The spell could be key recuperation time ahead of the run into Christmas.
